Typhus - Typhoid Fever
General information
In industrial countries cases that occur are primarily sporadic and imported. In Germany approximately 100-300 cases a year are reported, in Switzerland approx. 50 cases of which the majority is brought in from Southern countries. In third world countries the disease occurs relatively frequently due to the fact that the sanitary conditions are so poor; mainly adolescents are affected. In Africa and South East Asia one to two thousand people contract typhus in some areas.(Schmitt h.J., Hülßle C., Raue W.: Schutzimpfungen. Infomed, Berlin 1999). Mult-iresistant strains have been discovered in Asia, the Far East and Latin America.(BAG: Infektionskrankheiten, 2000, pge.212)
